Rose to Elena in 2x12
Rose was certainly written in for Damon/Elena
. If you look at this scene, when Rose asks Elena if she has ever been in Damon’s room before, she tells her that its just a room with a bed and old books and maybe she expected silk sheets and they smile to which Rose tells her “You’re lucky, you know. No one has ever loved me the way you’re loved.” and you could take this as her talking about Stefan AND Damon or you could take it as Rose telling Elena indirectly that Damon doesn’t love her the way he loves Elena, that he isn’t in love with her. This was probably the scene where Rose in the promo for the episode tells Elena “It’s okay, you know, to love them both” and Elena says “I care about Damon but I love Stefan” but they cut it out probably because it seemed too redundant at this point. But if you consider that that dialogue was a part of the scene before the final cut, then Rose’s line at the end of the scene about so much time being wasted and how she wished she hadn’t been afraid, certainly was subtext for the fact that Elena was running from her feelings for Damon and she wasted so much time and made so many mistakes especially in season 3, that when she does realize that she was in love with Damon long before she turned she is going to regret lying to herself the whole time because Damon won’t completely believe her because of the sire bond.
Obviously, Rose’s line can be applied to Damon as well as she later says in the episode, “He wants to care but the minute he does, he runs away from it” and how in 2x22 while he doesn’t regret his decisions because they all led him to Elena, he also tells Elena that she should have met him in 1864 and she would have liked him because he was a so much better person. Like Damon’s arc has been about running away from trying to feel because he never got gratified and always burned, Elena’s has been about trying to run away from the reality of her feelings for Damon because of many reasons. Both failed of course.
