i just realized that season 4 is basically dancing around the season 2 premiere.
in 2.01 damon wants to know the truth about katherine’s feelings, if she ever loved him, if her feelings were ever real and she says that she didn’t. in 1.09 after stefan tells damon that their love for katherine wasn’t real, damon says that his love for katherine was real for him. he doubted her feelings then already.
comparing it to season 4 situation with elena, we see that damon wants to know if elena’s feelings for him are real and it’s his worst insecurity that people keep throwing in his face and he just doesn’t know anymore what would be better: finding out it was all just the sire bond or never getting a real answer.
4.10 is basically 2.01 turned backwards. elena says she’s not in love with stefan anymore which negated the famous “it’s always going to be stefan”. then, rebekah says “i dare you to tell the truth about damon” and after that elena confesses that she’s in love with damon. as i’ve mentioned earlier on, katherine tells damon in 2.01: “the truth is i’ve never loved you”. later on in 4.10 elena calls damon and tells him “i realized something about us, about you. … it’s the most real thing i’ve ever felt in my entire life. i love you, damon. i love you!”
that’s the thing about damon. he loved katherine, he doubted her feelings at one point and then found out she never returned his feelings. now he’s in a similar situation with elena because he loves her but he can’t find out if her feelings for him are real and it bugs him so much. this just adds up to the endless list of reasons why i believe damon and elena are the endgame of the show. the writers don’t majorly screw a character twice. the point is that after being hurt and dashed, somehow you find the strength to give love another chance and you don’t get burned for bravery. at the end of the day the underdog gets the girl.
